چکیده

The spectral shift response of optical whispering-gallery modes due to the adsorption and desorption of water molecules into a SiO2 nano-coating is investigated. This coating is applied to a silica microsphere and optical-shift measurements are made at a very low humidity level (<10%). The micro-optical coupling system is incorporated into a sealed vacuum chamber for controlled humidity testing. The experimental observation of the whispering-gallery-mode spectral shift with refractive index is consistent with a theoretical analysis using Mie theory. A significant hysteresis effect is observed in the spectral shift of individual whispering-gallery modes during variable humidity tests. To understand the hysteresis mechanism, tests with step changes in humidity are performed, which reveal complex and dynamic water molecule transport phenomena between the nano-coating and surrounding environment.

Nanofiltration and sensing of picomolar chemical residues in aqueous solution using an optical porous resonator in a microelectrofluidic channel.

For the first time the use of a porous microresonator placed in a microelectrofluidic system for integrated functions of nanofiltration and sensing of small biomolecules and chemical analytes in extremely dilute solution was proposed and investigated. As an example, aminoglycosides in drug residues in food and livestock products were considered as the trace chemical analyte. The filtration proc...

Ultimate Q of optical microsphere resonators.

We demonstrate the quality factor Q - (0.8 +/- 0.1) x 10(10) of whispering-gallery modes in fused-silica microspheres at 633 nm, close to the ultimate level determined by fundamental material attenuation as measured in optical fibers. The lifetime of ultimate Q is limited by adsorption of atmospheric water. Monitoring of adsorption kinetics with submonolayer sensitivity by Q factors and frequen...

Discontinuous spectral element method modeling of optical coupling by whispering gallery modes between microcylinders.

We introduce a high-order time-domain discontinuous spectral element method for the study of the optical coupling by evanescent whispering gallery modes between two microcylinders, the building blocks of coupled resonator optical waveguide devices. By using the discontinuous spectral element method with a Dubiner orthogonal polynomial basis on triangles and a Legendre nodal orthogonal basis on ...

Optical Sensors Based on Whispering Gallery Modes in Fluorescent Microbeads: Response to Specific Interactions

Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in surface-fixated fluorescent polystyrene microbeads are studied in view of their capability of sensing the formation of biochemical adsorption layers on their outer surface with the well-established biotin-streptavidin specific binding as the model system. Three different methods for analysis of the observed shifts in the WGM wavelength positions are applied an...
